Book: Out of Fashion/ The new Fashion

For my birthday I got the book 'Out of fashion /The new fashion' by Birgitta de Vos.
A book about the world of textiles.
The world I love so much.
Beautiful photography combined with texts.
All done by Birgitta herself.

Birgitta de Vos writes in her book the followings quotes:

It is a picture poetry book embracing time as a treasure. Away from the fast lane of fashion it takes us on an inspirational world tour meeting forgotten textile makers and methods.

It is in love with the proces of creation and embraces time as a treasure. Silent branding, mending, contemplative clothing and unplugged crafting reminding us again who we really are: creative beings.

The beauty of this book starts with the cover.

A little strip of unbleeched cotton is wrapped around the page. A fabric which we all know and is used in many garments we wear on a daily basis.

The book is filled with visual poetry from all over the world.
Starting with 'Timeless White' and ending with 'Eternal Time'

And inbetween a world filled with garments, fabrics, colours and details.

About:

The Silk Road in Uzbekistan.

Vegetable dying.

Weaving.

Holy yarns made in Myanmar.

Mud painting in Mali.

Pigment powders from Morocco.

Stitching stories.

Fabrics of faith.

A button.

Indigo dying.

Printing with nails.

And much more ofcourse.

It is a book to cherish.
To open every now and than to absorb the beauty of it.
And it is a critical book about the fast fashion world were things are ‘out’ before they are ‘in’.
This book shows us the other side of textiles and fashion.
Made on a human scale and made by hand.
That is necesarry as opposed to against that industry.
Awareness is what we need to get a change in the fashionworld.

Because:

Do we really need all those clothes?
Do we really need every winter a new coat?
Do we really realize the impact on nature and enviroment when we buy an items at the high street?
Do we really accept childlabour in some factories?

Those questions came up while reading the book.
For that reason this book is also very important!

The book is also a tribute to all the craftsmen and women who are still making those beautiful items which we can enjoy.

From fabrics and garments which are made in the same way for ages.
From the joy of creating something beautiful.

It is a book about happiness and hope for a change in the fashion and textile industry.

I am touched by it everytime I open it.

The book can be ordered HERE.
